Downsizing from a large four-bedroom Chicago residence to a pair of pied-á-terres in New York and Paris, our client was imagining new homes that felt effortless yet richly layered compact retreats that could adapt to daily life, hosting, and moments of quiet escape.
The available space in the New York place was tight and the program was extensive: 1,200 sf for an entry hall, gallery, living room, library, dining room, office, guest room, primary
bedroom, two bathrooms, and ample closets. We reconfigured the open plan to carve out a hard-working den, designed to perform far beyond its footprint. A concealed panel
houses the clients’ beloved record player, a custom banquette hides a pull-out bed for guests, the dining area features an inviting corner for lingering diners. And to ensure true
flexibility, the den’s glass door is electrochromic, shifting from transparent to opaque to provide privacy. A wall of books houses our editor/client's lifetime achievements along with
many favorite family reads. Anchored by a generously scaled Carlo Scarpa sofa, the living room welcomes friends with ease. The palette of deep persimmons, rich blues, and warm
golds creates a rhythm of color from room to room throughout this compact apartment.
